Williams faced off with Italy’s Alessio di Savino, and from the opening bell, the American’s boxer kept Di Savino off balance.
I wasn’t nervous at all. I was excited, that’s why I was so loose in there. Being that it’s the Olympics and a big crowd, I just tried to score points. I just try to berelaxed and look at everything,” Williams said.

Andrade wins, Molina loses on busy day for US team
By GREG BEACHAM - USOC via AP (August 10, 2008)
BEIJING (AP)
Another American boxer wins, and another bows out with a health scare. Although the U.S. team isn't the world's most consistent bunch, it's been consistently dramatic in the Olympics so far.
Welterweight favorite Demetrius Andrade won a brawling Olympic debut Sunday night, but light welterweight Javier Molina lost a one-sided decision to Bulgaria's Boris Georgiev at Workers' Gymnasium.
Moments after the 18-year-old Molina was eliminated by his veteran opponent, U.S. coach Dan Campbell revealed the youngest American boxer wasn't cleared to fight until late Saturday after doctors discovered a hole in his lung had leaked air into his body.

(August 9, 2008)
By David Epstein, SI.com
BEIJING -- The U.S. boxing team lost one of its leading medal contenders on Friday morning when bantamweight Gary Russell Jr. missed the Olympic weigh-in hours after losing consciousness in his Olympic Village dorm room, possibly from dehydration.
"Gary, he was pushing to make weight," said U.S. Olympic boxing coach Dan Campbell. "At some point in the middle of the night we found him unconscious."
Russell's roommate, light flyweight Luis Yanez, found the 20-year-old Russell and told staff members at the village. Medical personnel revived Russell and gave him intravenous fluids. Russell's condition improved, but he was unable to attend the Friday weigh-in at a Beijing hotel.

Boxing Permit
(July 30, 2008)
Good afternoon,
Recently Delaware passed legislation (see attachment) which the governor just signed on Monday, changing the boxing, mixed martial arts and sports entertainment laws. What affects amateur boxing is that all events, whether there is a fee charged or not will require a permit from the State of Delaware. The fee for the permit still remains at $153. The law also gives the Division of Professional Regulation authority to select an advisory council that will draft new rules and regulations that help clarify the laws.

While the regular clients did their own workouts and Hilary Swank's trainer for "Million Dollar Baby" prepped a local fighter in a distant ring, Team USA performed in another corner of the shop-worn gym.
The session began when heavyweight Deontay Wilder led his seven Beijing-bound teammates in a series of stretches.
Afterward, middleweight Shawn Estrada wrapped his hands and gave his name to a reporter with a melodious Spanish accent and a wink.
